The word "Doula" comes from the ancient Greek, meaning "a woman who serves." A doula is a trained birth companion that provides continuous support to women during pregnancy, labour, and the postnatal period. A doula is not a medical professional, nor do they take the place of your partner, they are an additional part of the birth team that provides a variety of physical, emotional, and informational support. Doulas can support women during any type of birthing situation, such as a hospital, birthing centre, home birth or free birth.
A doulas primary person of interest is their client, their intention is to support and enhance the woman's experience and ensure she has a positive birthing memory. Midwives and doctors are there to act as the woman's healthcare provider, they ensure a safe birth and take care of the birthing woman and the babies medical needs; whereas a doula focuses on the woman and is a guiding continuous presence, she is exclusively there to care and nurture her.
Evidence confirms that hiring a doula for your birth experience not only decreases your risk for a c-section but also the need for other medical interventions and can even shorten the length of your labour. Studies have also shown that mothers who hire a doula are more closely bonded to their babies, have lower incidence of postnatal depression and are more likely to achieve their breastfeeding goals.

As your doula I provide physical support, this comes in many forms. Physical support can be hands on in the form of a soothing touch, massage, or counter pressure. It can be provided by using a Rebozo, applying a cool or warm compress or helping you get into different positions you can use during labour to find comfort. Physical support can also be as simple as supporting you to have someone to lean on and help you walk around, assist you to the bathroom, getting in and out of the shower or bath or providing food and water to you and your partner. I will also ensure your physical environment is the type of environment you want to create for your birthing space.
